Future Elections: Will Reason Trump Insanity?

This past election of Trump as leader of the free world, has made me more cynical than ever before about the future of American society. Sure there have been periods of time in the past (ie George W's presidency) that have made me wrestle with pessimistic thoughts of days to come. However, there was the notion that thought and reason would always win the day. Why I thought this was primarily due to the fact that arguments could be waged with some sense of rationality.
This was not always the case but at least in the media there was a healthy debate being waged and the very slightest of notions that things would eventually, hopefully get better. The internet was in its early stages and social media had not taken a hold of society as it has now. There was a filter somewhat still in place by proxy of social media's infancy, it was new and held promise. Now, that baby has grown older and is staking its claim on the collective consciousness of the citizens of this country.
We the people of the United States have become too reliant on what we read on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and less discerning of what the truth is. When a person can say on tape that they have openly assaulted multiple woman and laugh, there clearly something wrong with that person... right? One would think so, yet we have elected that exact person. In fact, there are those, including women that will rationalize and defend such actions. This is merely on example of the countless atrocities that President Trump has flagrantly displayed, with absolutely zero repercussions. Ironically, there are many others in politics and Hollywood whose careers are now over the same type of transgressions. The internet and social media has gone to a point in which rational arguments are lambasted and deemed nothing more than products of the liberal mindset. A strong "us vs. them" mentality has surfaced and productive arguments beyond the like minded, have become virtually extinct.
What does this mean for the future and Presidents to come? Unfortunately, the outlook is bleak. That is at least how it looks based on the rampant lies and vitriol that floods the web. Hate in its many forms has a safe haven in the mainstream media and the web. With Trump openly endorsing public discrimination such as companies putting signs up that they will not give service to the LGBT community. Policy such as this has set us back more than a decade and shows no sign of recovering. Our current moronic state is not simply a flash in the pan. It has been brewing for a while and once the catalyst was in place; pop! Do I have a solution? No, not really, at least, not one that is viable, or theoretically possible; I don't have a time traveling Delorean and can't do Jedi mind-tricks. All I can say is that I hope we, as a society, can last long enough to grow and reflect on the error of our ways. In many ways America has proven this to be more possible than not, and perhaps someday will again.
